The Project Under the Sea collection has been live for a few weeks and I’m excited to finally share some of the details with you! I sewed the pattern I contributed (Morgana Zip-Up now available in the shop!) and two of the other patterns so far for my girls.
I couldn’t resist the Suco by Susana Seaside Shorts, so of course I started with those. The sizing is 3t to 14, which is the perfect range for us right now.
The high waist is flattering and work well with the cropped shirts that are in style. For Bean I made a size 12 which has a great fit. I used Wolf & Rabbit poplin which is soft and has just enough weight to it to make it perfect for shorts.
The front pockets are slanted and have a shape reminiscent of sailor pants. There’s an option to add buttons up the sides of the pockets, which would be so cute.
For Kitty I made size 4t according to her hips which seems just right. The basic denim look poplin will work with lots of different tops so I’m glad I decided to make hers out of the same fabric as Bean’s. She’s at an age where she wants to dress herself, so basics that will go with anything are key, hehe.
Kitty has a tiny waist, so the option for having elastic in the back meant that I didn’t need to do any blending of sizes. The back still has a nice shape from the darts, so the elastic in the back is really just to cinch in the waist a bit.
There’s an invisible zipper on the left hand side (which of course I forgot to grab a picture of) and Susana does a lovely job of guiding you right through. She suggests Wash-Away Wonder Tape, which is one of my favorites and always high on my suggestion list. It makes things like zippers so much easier!
The other pattern I sewed for Kitty was the Reef Top. This one comes in sizes from 12m to 14 and it has the sweetest look to it. I sewed the double ruffle flounce, cause I couldn’t resist and it came together quickly.
This one was also in size 4t and I used another Wolf & Rabbit poplin from my stash. The floral looks so pretty with all that ruffling and the denim look shorts make the colors pop. The Reef Top uses 3/8″ elastic at the waist and top edges, so all the gathering is done without a lot of basting and fussing.
Bean wanted another Morgana Zip-Up which is the pattern I contributed to the collection. I’ll go into more detail about the pattern in another post, but it’s sizes newborn to 16 years and there are six views to suit lots of different styles. It’s meant as a zip-up hoodie or a cover-up, but Bean pretty much just wants the cropped hoodie view F, in all the colors, hehe.
This is size 12 in a Raspberry Creek Fabrics minky (Cuddle) from years ago that I had in my stash. The Morgana is designed for minimal stretch fabrics, so Shannon Fabrics Cuddle double-sided minky is perfect for it. Raspberry Creek actually prints on a Shannon base, so their fabric is one I definitely recommend if you’re thinking about double-sided minky.
Both the Reef Top and Seaside Shorts are on a Flash Sale until June 18th, so I would run to grab them now, using code seaside23 for 30% off.
