I’m loving the newest Project Run & Play collection called Project Night & Day and can’t wait to share the two patterns I designed for it! The Verdant Windbreaker and Daybreak Belt Bag are both so very 90’s and I’m totally here for it. Get them both over in the Project Run & Play shop now!
Let’s start with the belt bag. The Daybreak Belt Bag is a pattern for a bag that can be worn either across the body or around the waist. Above, you can see the small size as worn across the body by almost five year old Kitty. And though this has that 90’s feel to it, this is not your mother’s “fanny pack.” Being able to switch quickly between across the body and around the waist is a great feature.
There are three sizes – small, medium, and large – along with the option for a zippered lining pocket, mesh lining pocket, or both. The interior is fully-lined and I prefer using both of the pocket styles. The mesh pocket is nice for just dropping something like a lip balm inside, while the zippered pocket can hold more secure items like a credit card or some cash.
The outside is a simple, streamlined shape with a squared bottom and curved top, which looks great in either a minimalist solid or a fun printed fabric. I love that I found some colorful seatbelt style webbing (*affiliate link) that I could use for a yellow strap for Kitty. Yellow is her favorite color and she LOVES her lemon print belt bag and it was fun getting to customize it just for her.
Now I know we’re all wondering, so here it is! Yes, your cell phone fits perfectly inside the medium size, hehe.
And of course, it will also fit inside the large size. This large was made using a Shannon Fabrics Luxe Cuddle© on the outside and it’s my absolute fav. It’s so soft and fun to pet, but still holds up to whatever I need to carry around with me.
Moving on to the Verdant Windbreaker, I initially designed this one as an oversized windbreaker that is fully-lined and with lots of pocket space. I wanted a big kangaroo pocket with slanted zippers to hold everything inside, and pictured the tiny hands that would fill out this space. The other center drop in pocket was added on later when I decided in order to be an epic 90’s style windbreaker it had to have a front pocket that could be turned inside out to work as a stuff sack for the entire jacket to be zipped inside. I love that this idea worked out!
The drop in pocket also has a zipper and if you want to have the stuff sack option, just be sure to have a reversible zipper on hand. The pink fabric I used for this windbreaker is a boardshort fabric from Raspberry Creek Fabrics (*affiliate link) and I truly think boardshort is a great way to go for the full windbreaker. Project Run & Play has an RCF Studio (*affiliate link) with some gorgeous designs in it that would be perfect to use in the boardshort substrate. It’s not 100% a waterproof fabric, but it still works wonderfully as a raincoat substrate and is SO EASY to sew with.
The other view for the Verdant Windbreaker is not a windbreaker at all, but more of a pullover. This one is not lined so it’s perfect for a lofty fabric that’s soft inside like this Cloud Cuddle© or a french terry. While this view doesn’t have any pockets, it shares the same curved front/back and dropped shoulder style that makes it such a comfortable wear. And the bonus for this bare-bones view is that it’s a quick sew!
One of the features I really love is the deep hood and neckline that all the views share. While there’s an option for a drawstring, my girls don’t love the dangling strings and what we do love about this is that you can wear the hood and feel like it’s a full coverage without cinching it around the head. It makes it extra cozy and almost like you can get lost in there hehe.
And when the neckline is unzipped you get this really lovely 1/2 zip silhouette which I can’t get enough of. I had a Columbia pull-over fleece back in the 90’s that didn’t have a hood and I wore it with the 1/2 zip unzipped all the time. This takes me back!
You can find both of these new patterns, along with all of these other goodies from the Project Night & Day collection in the Project Run & Play shop! **ETA these are both available in the DbCA shop now! Daybreak here and Verdant here.
